Mr. Sack was elected to our Board of Directors in 2005. He has been on the Board of Directors of the National Restaurant Association since 1995 and served as Chair of the Board from 2005 to 2006. He currently serves on the Board of the Marine Corps Association and Foundation, where he has been a member since 2009.
He also served on the Board of Applebee’s International for 13 years and on the Board of Tibersoft Corporation, a supply chain software company, for 15 years. He currently serves on the Board of Cambryn Biologics, a blood fractionation company.
Mr. Sack joined the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 17 and spent three years at duty stations, mostly in the Far East. He was discharged with the rank of Sergeant. Within a week of his discharge, he matriculated into the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University, where he graduated in three and a half years with a Bachelor of Science degree with Distinction. During this time, he worked his way through school as a full-time Deputy Sheriff attached to the Cornell University Police Department.
Upon graduation, he joined the Howard Johnson Company as an Advertising Assistant and worked his way up to Senior Vice President for Real Estate, Architecture, Design, Construction, and Corporate Development. At the time he left Howard Johnson’s, the company had 1,100 restaurants and more than 400 motor lodges.
With an investment group, Mr. Sack later led a leveraged buyout to acquire 15 upscale restaurants known as Red Coach Grills. After selling the restaurants for their real estate value, he acquired the New England franchise rights for Applebee’s restaurants at a time when only two Applebee’s locations were operating.
He went on to open 16 restaurants in eight years. Because his restaurants achieved high volumes and were among the most profitable in the system, Applebee’s purchased his franchise in exchange for stock and elected him to their Board of Directors.
When Tempra was sold in 2007, the company had 2,200 operating restaurants, and Mr. Sack was the largest individual shareholder.
Mr. Sack is also a life member of the Cornell University Council, a former member of the Dean’s Advisory Board, a founding member of the Marine Corps Heritage Museum, and a graduate of the PMD Program at the Harvard Business School.
